Artist's Comments

This is part of a project for my Adv Photography II. The three projects I proposed for the semester all involved handmaking silk, bamboo, and soy silk paper. The three processes I decided to use were polaroid lifts, vandyke brown, and cyanotype.
This is a cyanotype I did a few days ago and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I had to make all the chemicals for both the cyanotype and vandyke brown processes and :giggle: I thought for sure I screwed them up but nope they came out just fine! :w00t: I did two vandyke browns yesterday and I'm not very pleased with them as the contrast is not nearly as nice and the images are not dark enough. I think I will need to expose them outside for longer and maybe make my negatives more contrasty.

Made on processed silk fiber. (the others are bamboo)

Process
Purchased Processed Fiber (Bamboo, Tussah Silk, and SoySilk)
Used a Process called Silk Fusion
Created Digital Negatives with Pictorico Premium OHP Transparency Film
Purchased chemicals for Cyanotypes and Vandyke browns. I mixed each set of chemicals and applied the emulsion to the paper. After the paper was dry I overlayed the digital negatives over the paper and exposed them to UV light from the sun outside. :)

o.0 That's pretty hardcore, you had to do it all from SCRATCH? How did you do that?

I just editing the description with more information on the processes I used in order to create my print. :)

:giggle: Thankie. This project takes quite a variety of different processes in order to complete including mixing and heating up the chemicals, handmaking the paper, printing out digital negatives from a digital photo, handcoating paper, and then exposing the print in daylight. I love these UV processes as you don't have to spend a long time in the darkroom...more time is spent outside watching the print develop before your eyes which is awesome to see. :)

Thankie :) When I first thought of the idea of making prints on silk paper I wasn't sure how good of a response I would get to the work as it is something totally different than the norm in photography. I'd love to continue making more. ^_^

What do you use as a fixative so it'll stop developing once you're done? Just the normal stuff in the dark room?

The vandyke brown requires a special fixer and the cyanotype just requires a nice long wash no fixing needed. :)
At the bottom of my description I put links to all the processes and there is a link to both the vandyke and cyanotype process that describe how it all works. Both processes require UV light to work so they are excellent summer projects. The only downside to these processes is mixing the chemicals and yes they are toxic :paranoid: but its a lot of fun to work on.
