On June 30th my mom *Tazzy- brought me home a female Polyphemus Moth. She was shaking a lot and we set her on a tree hoping to get photos of her. She fluttered off a bit and we had to run after the moth to make sure she didn't get away before we got some decent photos. She landed on our apple tree and we started to take more photos only to realize she was laying eggs. She only laid 8 eggs and flew away by the end of the day. Normally they lay about 200-250 :o
The Caterpillars hatched out on July 9th. They have gone through their first molt which is refered to as the 2nd Instar. They go through 5 stages before they cocoon. They will get very big about 3.5 inches (90 mm).

Here's some links for more information on them.

The 500D is a special close up filter that canon makes. It's basically a huge chunk of magnifying glass. It's super awesome. I use it a lot for my butterfly scale images that I used on my senior project the butterfly flower series. If you like doing macros it's a fantastic addition :eyes:

It will allow you to focus closer than normal but not sure how well it'd work with the 18-55 as far as getting macro shots goes. I don't have that lens anymore to test it out unfortunately.

Do you have a 50 mm? The 500D works pretty good with that lens as well. [link]

How are the hoya +4 and +2 like I've never used them?

I like the way polyphemus caterpillars are front-heavy. I guess those large heads contain some powerful muscles to chew through oak leafs.

Two days ago mom and I found a huge one :o it had to be at least 90 mm long..bigger than my fingers. It was along the bottom of the side on the house so we took it inside and set it on some leaves on some white paper so we could take photos of it. Until we noticed it started spinning. I didn't get a chance to take photos before it started spinning so here's one of mom's [link] We put it in an empty butter container full of leaves and now its cocooned. :)
When they first molt for their new instar they always look front heavy but then they sort of grow into their massive head :giggle:
